The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Home Office which was established under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 and started operating on 1 December 2012. It helps Organisations and employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children.
The DBS carries out the functions previously undertaken by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) for England and Wales and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
It is a requirement that all teaching staff within a swim school hold an up to date enhanced DBS. All DBS applications must be carried out through the Swim England online DBS service or registered with the DBS Update Service and consent for Swim England to check this. All affiliated swim schools will be given access to the Swim England online DBS service.
DBS Update Service Swim England also accepts DBS checks that have been carried out by another organisation as long as they have been registered with the Update Service and it is the required level of check for their swim school role.
Any staff that have a DBS registered with the Update Service will need to complete a Swim England consent form and return to Swim England along with their original DBS Disclosure Certificate.
